Sinagra Family Dairy

Amite, Louisiana

Our Story

Sinagra Family Dairy is a family-owned and operated dairy farm in Amite, Louisiana, with roots dating back to 1997.

The farm's story began years earlier when Darrell Sinagra started working at a local dairy at just 14 years old. After years of learning the trade, Darrell and his wife, Cassie, purchased their own farm in 1997, where they raised their two children, Miles and Makenzie, alongside their dairy herd.

After growing up on the farm, Miles initially pursued a career outside agriculture, moving to New York City for college and work. But his family's farming roots eventually drew him back to Louisiana. Recognizing the challenges facing small dairy farms, Miles returned home with a vision to sell milk directly to consumers and rebuild the connection between local farmers and their communities.

In May 2024, the family began selling its own farm-bottled milk, offering a locally produced alternative to conventional grocery-store dairy.

Today, Sinagra Family Dairy remains a true family operation, with Darrell, Cassie, Miles, and Makenzie all contributing to the business. Their mission is simple: preserve independent family farming while making fresh, traditionally produced Louisiana milk more accessible to their community.

Production Practices

Sinagra Family Dairy raises its cows on pasture year-round, providing more than an acre and a half of grazing space per cow. Rather than keeping their herd confined in stalls, the family allows their cows to spend their days outdoors on open pasture.

The cows are brought into the milking barn twice daily, and their milk is processed and bottled directly on the farm, approximately 85 feet from where the cows are milked. This unusually short distance between milking and bottling helps keep production local and minimizes unnecessary transportation.

Their pasteurized milk undergoes a traditional low-temperature vat pasteurization process, gently heated to 145°F for 30 minutes before being chilled and bottled.

Unlike most conventional grocery-store milk, Sinagra's milk is never homogenized. This allows the cream to naturally rise to the top, preserving the rich texture and traditional creamline characteristic of farm-fresh milk.

By combining pasture-based animal raising, on-farm bottling, and traditional dairy processing, Sinagra Family Dairy offers a more direct connection between the farm, its animals, and the families enjoying its milk.
