Alabama: Grown and harvested in Hazel Green, Alabama, the Mutsu (often called the Crispin) is a prized Japanese cultivar created by crossing a Golden Delicious with an Indo apple. Named after Japan's Mutsu Province where it was developed, it features a striking light yellowish-green skin and a remarkably dense, crisp flesh that holds up extraordinarily well.
Flavor-wise, Mutsus offer a complex balance of sweet and tangy notes with a subtle floral aroma, making them an exceptional eating apple as well as a chef favorite for cooking, sauce-making, and baking—as their firm texture doesn't break down or get mushy under heat.
Compared to mass-market supermarket apples, orchard-fresh Mutsus are left on the tree longer to fully develop their complex, honeyed tartness and distinctive crunch, completely avoiding the dull, watery taste and mealy texture of long-stored commercial stock.
